58. What DVD-R media should I use with my Pioneer Superdrive?

What DVD-R media should I use with my Pioneer Superdrive?
The Pioneer Superdrive requires general purpose (rather than authoring) 4.7GB or 9.4GB double sided (4.7GB per side) DVD-R media.

For data storage, the Superdrive is compatible with a wide variety of generic and brand name media.

For home made video DVD-R's meant to be played in a home video DVD player, choosing the right media is made difficult by incompatibilities between DVD-R media and many video DVD players .

The media most compatible with video DVD players are from Apple and Maxell, according to Digital Video Magazine (article summarized at first link below). Apple has a DVD player compatibility list (second link below).
Some media retailers offer variety packs of the different media they sell (example at third link below), so that the Superdrive owner can determine which works best with his/her video DVD player before buying in bulk.

If buying a new video DVD player, choosing one that specifies DVD-R compatibility should greatly reduce compatibility problems.
